What is a catalytic converter?

Catalytic converters are exhaust emission control devices. The catalytic converter’s main purpose is to convert toxic gases created by an internal combustion engine into what are considered to be less toxic gases. This process is achieved by catalyzing a redox reaction.
You may either need a catalytic converter replacement or a catalytic converter repair.

Signs that your catalytic converter may be going bad

One of the first signs that your catalytic converter may be going bad is that your engine will start to perform stigmatically. You may suspect that your engine does not have the required power to drive your vehicle when this is simply not the case. It has more to do with the state of the catalytic converter than it does with the engine. Which brings us to the next point: You may notice that there is reduced acceleration and that your car simply does not have the pull that it usually has when you put your foot on the pedal. This is something that can easily be misdiagnosed. You need a professional to look at your vehicle to determine if the catalytic converter is in fact the problem.

What is the difference between black smoke and white smoke?

Have you ever noticed on the road that some vehicles emit white smoke from the exhaust while others may emit dark? The white smoke has to do with fuel air combustion, while the dark smoke is an indication that your catalytic converter is going bad. In addition, if the vehicle is emitting a dark smoke from the exhaust, you may also notice a foul odor such as sulfur or rotten eggs coming from your exhaust pipe.

Additionally, you may notice that your engine produces excessive amounts of heat or overheats very quickly. This is yet another sign that your catalytic converter needs to be repaired or replaced. As previously mentioned, it is best advised to speak to a certified mechanic about these issues as they may point to another problem in your emissions system.
